480x272 is the resolution of psp. higher resolution than this wouldn't mean better quality.

though 720x480, 640x480 and 720x576 resolutions are supported too with the latest psp firmwares. video does have some restrictions (max reference frames, b-frame restrictions etc) though, if you encode H264/AVC video respecting these restrictions, video does play fine both on psp and on tv via tv-out cable.

in short yes 480p video playback is possible, but it is another question if it is worth or not.

i prefer using x264.exe via command line interface, so i don't use front ends. though you should find some via simple googling.

I tend to use Handbrake myself. Just make sure the h.264 profile is baseline 3.0 and Anamorphic is off for the PSP, I'm not entirely sure what the Vita will accept. Also, there's no real reason to go above 480x272 for the PSP or 960×544 for the PS Vita as that's the size of their screens.

Video stored on UMD is typically encoded in 720×480 resolution, but is scaled down when displayed on the PSP. Try "Freemake Video Converter".

And also XVID4PSP 5 and 6.

The matter is,that,if you have a video for psp with the resolution 472 X 260 the size of the movie will be over 800 MB !! Though with the 368 X 208 large screen with format factory, the movie will be only 300MB or less,so...That's why many people just take the 368 X 208 Screen

Well, the video resolution alone doesn't determine the resulting file size, video "quality" aka encoding parameters do (basically, how blurred/detailed the video is). Something that isn't too detailed (like cartoons) can be compressed very well without noticeable quality loss.

The majority of these errors depend on the device you use to watch movies, try using a smart TV with a TV application.
