Had the Playstation 3 really reached its limit when the ps4 came out?

Post by Nigan »

Hello everyone,,
While games like the last of us, gta 5 or AC 4 or even MGS 5 look very good and are technical marvels I always heard that the ps3 was still capable of more. Is this really true? [removed by mod]

I believe yes, most GTA V and GTA Online updates could work on the PS3 version just as they do on the PS4, had not Rockstar decided to drop support for PS3 and Xbox 360 on focus on the current-gen consoles (of course other than graphics-related updates).

I'm a huge GTAV fan, and I'd have to disagree big guy :)

I've been coding for FiveM and notice even the best cars don't accelerate past 130MPH. This limitation was from consoles, in fact if you mod PS3 and break the top speed limit you will see textures loading slow, "popping in", or just not loading period. Rockstar pulls the veil over your eyes by simply not providing a speedometer.

On PC however I can have a fully stable 200+ MPH Adder.

I will agree they got lazy and should have supported DLC on old consoles (People paid just as much for the 360/PS3 version as they paid for current gen) and it's kind of a slap in the face for the individuals like myself who had to purchase the game twice.
Does it quit? If not, then it's legit... Too legit.

Nvidia Shield Portable 48gb
Dreamcast: SEGA Sports - 80gb IDE HDD
4k PS3 Super Slim OFW 4.82
1k PSP: 6.60 ME-2.3
1K PSVita: Ensō 32GB - 64GB SD2VITA - 128GB PSVSD

True, I had to purchase the game twice as well. And yes what you said is true, but there are countless other things that would have worked. For instance, the RC races in GTA Online, or even the bunkers, clubs, and casinos later on. And even if those would be too much they could have at least added new weaponry, the new radio stations, or just some slow cars. They definitely did get lazy.

The thing is that the PS3 isn't far behind the PS4, it could have soldiered on for a while, but the market required a new generation of consoles and Sony couldn't let its competitors take all of the cake.
There hasn't been any gaming revolution for a while like the transition from 2D to 3D, VR and games requiring the player to move (Wii, Kinect) are still to mature, but business is business, so the XBone and PS4 were released with limited progress in comparison to the previous generation.
I'd bet that the PS5, next XBox and next Nintendo console won't feature anything groundbreaking either... Especially when TV technology has more or less peaked at 4K pixels.
