BackupTools(for windows, just like macs time machine

Post by theastamana »

As mentioned in the title....

Do you guys have a certain programm where you make backups, that you can keep different versions of files?
(On mac you have a build in programm called timemachine, that is able to do that.)
I would love to have that programm on windows, since my backup disk is in there.
Currently I am just backuping what is on my NAS and DISKS onto another disk, but would love to save different versions.

at this point I am running windows 7. I am not able to use dropbox, because the files I want to backup are way to big. The total file size is aroun 200 GB.\
It is for photos, documents and app development.

At that size per backup, a USB3.0 portable HDD is likely the only viable method.

You can setup Windows backup to use a portable HDD as the backup destination, and adjust it to include all the directories you need.
After that, you can right click on any file that has been backup up to restore it to a previous version.
This choice isn't as viable if you need to manually adjust the contents of the backup drive though.

Alternatively, you could manually create each backup set on a portable HDD (maybe just a folder with a date it was made), and then modify the indexing to include those directories and adjust windows search to only check indexed directories. Windows Search should somewhat rapidly find all copies.

If you're not already using git or hg for that, you're doing it wrong.
