[Updated 1-24-14] My PS3 Mods

Post by SMOKE »

I just wanted to show you guys my PS3 fan mod since I finished it a couple days ago.
Basicly what I did is cut a hole in the PS3's lid where the fan is.
I then glued some mesh screen around the hole to keep big things from getting in there.
I also have a fan speed adjuster on the side of it, and now my PS3 runs at around 40 C
Heres a pic and yes, I also have an E3 Flasher :)

UPDATE:
I made a led mod in the fan :D Heres how it looks with the lights on:

And with the lights off:

UPDATE2:
I added a custom fan grill to my PS3

UPDATE3:
Since I moved, I have been using my neighbors WiFi and he lives over 1/4 mile away from me. I can connect with my Pc no problems, but my PS3 would not stay connected to it. So I decided to make my own external antenna for my PS3 :)
I seen someone on YouTube do this, so I didn't think of this on my own
I drilled a hole in the back of the PS3 and installed a plug into the PS3 (called a pig tail or something like that)

Here's what ti looks like when the PS3 is back together:

Then I got normal antenna and pluged it in and it looks great:

Now, here's the proof that I can connect to my neighbors WiFi and he's over 1/4 mile away from me!

What do you guys think?

That is awesome! But, how does that hole effect the system performance? Like, Does it keep it from over heating?

It allows ALOT more air flow through the PS3, keeping it much cooler.
It sounds like a jet engine when I have it on full speed too

pretty awesome SMOKE, but remember that cold can be just as bad as heat, make sure the system, specially the thermal paste, are all running at a safe temperature. Other than that, great job!

my PS3 recently started making a lot of noise, so I took it apart to test the thermal paste
the thermal paste was ok so I ended up doing some cooling mods to it:

I created an exhaust system right under the fan to allow for more cool air to enter the system.
The handmade fan was created using a PS2 slim fan I had lying around and a USB cable with two connections (the ps2 fan uses around 8 volts, not enough if you use only one USB -> 5 volts).

To make the handcrafted external fan just connect the fan's red and black cables with the USB's red and black cables. There are 3 extra cables, one on the fan (yellow iirc, used to control the speed) and two on the USB (white and green, used for data), none of them matter so just make sure they don't touch the other cables.

I don't know the exact details, but the fan must neither be too noisy, nor too quiet.
