Yes, dual boot. If you want to use Ubuntu you can install it from Windows with wubi which comes with it. That's probably the easiest way to do it.

sorry, but i wouldn't suggest anyone to use wubi ... ever

besides, the live installers usually does a fine job of parting up your hdd (properly faster too), if you got enough free space + you can test before installing to see if everything works correct ... ;)

I don't recommend Wubi, it's easier but you'll most likely run into trouble later. Boot from a LiveCD/DVD and use gParted to make space on a partition with free space. Keep in mind you most likely want at least 2 partitions for a Linux system (one for Linux installation, one for swap), although you can live without swap partition.

Best thing IMHO is to backup all your data, erase all partitions and everything, and start from zero.

For a recommended HD setup, I usually go like this:

- A primary partition for Windows system (NTFS)
- A partition for Windows user data (NTFS)
- A partition for Linux root system (ext4 - mounted at /)
- A partition for Linux user data (ext4 - mounted at /home)
- A partition for Linux swap (swap - no filesystem, not mounted)

(Never use obsolete filesystems like FAT or ext2).

This way you can erase and reinstall the system without losing any personal data. In Linux case, you'll even maintain any configurations and preferences, which is great. In both cases most applications needs reinstall after reinstalling the OS.

If you can't backup your data or don't want to, here are some tips at resizing partitions:

- Make sure you defragment the partition you want to split if it's NTFS/FAT, and see if free space is enough for creating your new partition.
- Never use all the remaining free space.
- Try to backup at least the most important data you don't even think about losing into a DVD or external disk

Keep in mind you still might corrupt the filesystem on the partition you want to resize (this most likely means losing data you have on it).

PD: it's usually better to think about such things BEFORE installing the OS.

I was merely offering an easy solution, but yeah wubi's not perfect. Then again what is? :|

Wubi is decent for getting to know Ubuntu and if you're not familiar with partitioning a hard drive. If you're just a tourist (not sure if you want to totally switch/dual boot) then Wubi is fine.

Yes, if you don't know how/want to partition your hard drive Wubi seems like your best bet to "try out" Ubuntu. If you like it then I suggest that you get rid of Wubi and learn how to partition your HD like M0skit0 suggested.
