Ubuntu and Windows 8

Post by KaptainBio »

Hey Guys!

I have a problem here.

I want to install Ubuntu beside Windows 8 but it does not work!

What i have done:

USB-Boot Stick [doesnt work, windows boots and not the OS on the Bot-Stick]
Installed the OS through a virtual ODD.
Well this worked, i have got it installed, but i Want to use surely more then just 30GB. And the next problem I have is, that i cant start it.
Windows wants then that i put a Windows 8 CD in and so on. It is just horrible.

Any ideas what i can do?

Sounds like you took space allocated to Windows, and now Windows wants to reformat thinking its partition is damaged.
You may need to do a full reformat.

To have both:
Install Windows, making sure to partition it so that Windows has space, but that empty unused space is left over (this space is how much you want ubuntu+swap+user to have)

Then you'll need to make sure to load into your BIOS menu, and either boot from USB manually with the device boot menu, or alter the boot order so USB is before the drive windows is on.
(They key can vary by motherboard make, but you can typically spot the key to enter the BIOS on the motherboard splash screen just as your computer turns on.)

After that, it should boot the USB drive, and make sure to install the grub2 bootloader as well as Ubuntu itself, so that the default Windows one is replaced.

Will try again tomorrow

//EDIT:

And this UEFI is so bad....

Install Windows and give it the partition it enough space. The rest can remain not partitioned. This will install the windows bootloader.
From your BIOS settings, set the USB drive as highest priority and run Ubuntu.
Install Ubuntu on the not partitioned space. This will replace the windows bootloader with grub2.

Extra question: so, how did you install an OS using a virtual drive?

// edit: eufi should have such settings as well. It's a bios anyways. You might also want to check this article out.

Translation:
You have an Error, this is how to solve this....
1. Put a WIndows CD/DVD in
2. Pick your language
3.fix computer

If you dont own this CD the contact someone....

If preinstalled, skip to next step. // off-topic: just curious, did you get an install or repair disk?

Out of these, USB HDD sounds most like a flash drive.

The Linux installers always have a partitioner.
Okay, I haven't used the Ubuntu Windows installer, but the last time I read about how it works, it only installed a boot manager and expected the ubuntu install to be inserted in the drive. Does it still do that?

I think it's UEFI scr..ing things up. See if you can disable secure boot.

Have done it already, but cant boot a system then....

Just a black screen and then this here appears

But only if NO USB-Stick is in. If mine with Ubuntu is in, then he does not boot from it....

Would it change much if i switch to the good old Windows 7?

8 seems like much more of a pain than 7 tbh. I don't see any advantage of it. Thing is that 8 requires uefi, 7 doesn't.
Are QuickBoot/FastBoot, FastStartup/anything similar sounding or Intel Smart Response Technology on?
