Which Computer?

Post by Sam A56 »

Hi, I plan on being a game developer and I currently use the free version of Unity and Blender. However, I have a crappy laptop that is well... crappy, so i have decided to upgrade from an AMD-A6 3400M with 6 GB of memory and an integrated GPU to something a bit more satisfying like these:

8970:
http://www.amazon.com/MSI-GX70-3BE-007U ... s=richland

780:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CU9 ... ZZL30AH7DI

http://www.amazon.com/MSI-Series-GT70-2 ... B00CU9GNA0

http://www.amazon.com/MSI-Series-GT70-2 ... B00CU9GNCS

770:
http://www.amazon.com/MSI-Series-GT70-2 ... m_sbs_pc_6

680:
http://www.amazon.com/Computer-Corp-GT6 ... cart_recs3

keep in mind my mom and I will be paying which ever one I end up getting off over the course of a year and we don't have a lot of money. my dad, who is in much better financial shape than my mom might help pay so together they may be able to afford a more expensive lappy.

notice only one AMD product, the rest are Intel

I wanted a laptop so i could take it to college with me when I start in July. Otherwise I would DEFINITELY get a desktop.

Honestly, I would still not just get an expensive laptop.

While "on the go" in collage, you don't need that powerful a laptop. At least around here you can go to any pawn shop and get a netbook for about $100. That would be just fine for collage. Heck, my main computer for 2 years was a little Eeepc 900.

Then, with the money you saved, you can get a really nice desktop.

My suggestion:

Build an M-ATX rig
Get a cheap laptop and stream your desktop to that laptop.

Ok, rewind... maybe i should explain why i need a total powerhouse.

1)I will be 3D modeling in 3DS Max, probably Maya (during class). For homework, Blender.

2)I will be using my laptop to DEVELOP games with the Unity 3D game engine, which I've grown fond of.

The next generation of Nvidia mobile GPU's has hit the market. so I'm also wondering, should I get a 780 or a 680. The price gap is quite small (depending on the model and brand). Although, because its new it might have bugs and such, with drivers I mean.

I will also up date the list shortly.

To be honest, non of these would work perfectly for what you need, You can get a cheaper laptop to make graphics in Maya since your only saying that you will be using it for class work, Then i would recommend you to buy an actual computer since using a laptop/s like those you mentioned, will not work out.

You should check what mobos those models have. Mobo is one of the most ignored components while being one of the most important ones. For example, I have a Core 2 Duo E8400 with 4 GiB RAM from like 5+ years ago and it still runs everything I throw at it, even most recent games, which is THE benchmark. Real-time 3D calculations are way more expensive that pre-calculated 3D (Maya, Blender...).
I wanna lots of mov al,0xb
