I have an older, underpowered laptop that I am using only for retro emulators. Decided to switch over to Linux, but I've only had experience with the Mint distro. Was wondering if anyone else might have recommendations. Thanks in advance.

Arch Linux, But it will require a tad bit of work from you to fully setup.
You could also try ElementaryOS if you want to stick with Debian.

End of the day tho you can use any distro.

You can just pick any distro for that. For ease of use and up to date emus go with ubuntu or a variant of ubuntu, I recommend going for lubuntu as it takes much less resources that you can easily use for the emus.

Zorin OS is my favorite, I have previously tried Ubuntu 12.10 & 14.04 and Mint 17.

But Zorin is the most stable and comes pre packed with all the things you need. It comes pre installed with WINE which allows you to use WIndows apps and games out of the box.

Just my opinion of course, I have not tried Arch or ElementaryOS.
