Interesting, I wish I knew so I could see this in action, because after reading the amazing book Sabriel, I really wanted to make something of the sorts of a custom card game. I was actually taking from how WoW CCG works with the "avatar"/hero card. The mana symbols would be replaced with the book's Charter Marks and would represent Life (and heiromancy), Death (and necromancy), Free magic, and Time (represented for the Clyr). The Charters on your avatar (as a planeswalker card) would dictate which spells you could control, mana would work just as before, and to not be a "like-magic-but", have something about combat/flow to change, which I just never got around to planning.

Actually, I might want to suggest inplay: or hand:, but I can't say for sure those will work completely as needed if you're changing them.
